"Treatment, Synthesis, and Art Direction" Charlie Engman is an artist, photographer, writer, and art director based in Brooklyn, New York.He works across a range of media and disciplines from gen-AI art, photography, video, and fashion, and balances artistic, commercial, and pedagogical practices. He is the art director of the sustainable fashion brand, Collina Strada, where he is responsible for print design, branding, and runway show design. This workshop will investigate the ways in which media, aesthetics, and culture are interwoven and overlapping and are driven in large part by the accessibility of popular technology. It will also investigate the ways in which creativity is a collaborative and iterative process that bleeds across genre and category. There will be a key focus on the intersection of photography, AI tools, and videogaming / user-driven media.In this workshop, participants are expected to explore and challenge the ways they integrate and synthesize both professional and vernacular registers and new and traditional techniques. This will also serve as an introduction to developing art direction and making “ treatments ” for commissioned projects, and practical experience concepting and executing assignments that can bridge between a distinctive artistic practice and preexisting modes of making and sharing.

"Frontiere di Sabbia" is an exhibition of the students of the Master of Photography at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, in collaboration with the Biennale dell’Immagine di Chiasso.The collection of projects you will see has been created with drones: aircraft originally developed for warfare that have been transformed into civilian and popular forms. In just a few years, these devices have undergone a dizzying technological evolution and achieved considerable commercial success. Used for a variety of purposes - recreational and professional, political and subversive - these “unmanned aerial vehi- cles” can be easily purchased and controlled remotely, like in a video game. The opportunities offered by civilian drones combine with multiple negative con- sequences: the confusion between reality and simu- lation, privacy violations, and the use for illegal and violent actions. From a photographic perspective, drones offer infinite viewpoints for exceptional, vertical, and total vision. Equipped with all-round sensors, they fly autonomou- sly on programmed routes and are able to monitor the territory and its inhabitants. The “Frontiere di Sabbia” exhibition, presented in the Ex Saceba building, a ce- ment factory located a few kilometers from the bor- der, recalls the past of these places where materials were produced to build houses, bridges, and highways, but also walls and barriers. By diverting from prede- termined and automated paths, a new generation of image creators questions us about our perception of our limits: human, political, and technological.

The first year students in Graphic Design and Media & Interaction Design and Photography worked on mapping projects. The structures, which the different groups created with blocks of polystyrene, allowed them to experiment and create video, 2D and 3D content while playing with notions of space, depth and rhythm.

The project involved around fifty students divided into groups of two. The students, who graduated from ECAL's Visual Communication Department's Bachelors in Graphic Design, Media & Interaction Design and Photography, were supervised by Angelo Benedetto, Vincent Jacquier, Clément Lambelet and Florian Pittet, assisted by Kylan Luginbühl, Amaury Hamon and Julien Gurtner. The MAST Foundation is presenting the seventh edition of Foto/Industria, the world's first biennial event devoted to photography of industry and work, at a number of historic venues in Bologna and at MAST. The 12 exhibitions in Foto/Industria 2023 represent a chronology of points of view on the theme of PLAY, from the end of the 19th century to the present day. They offer an opportunity to observe and delve into the research of a selection of international artists. The ECAL is presenting an exhibition of its research project Automated Photography. An increasing number of images are produced autonomously by machines for machines with a gradual exclusion of any human intervention. Automated Photography is a research project developed by the Master Photography that addresses this situation by examining the technologies of image production and distribution such as: machine learning, CGI, photogrammetry.

Following the success of the exhibition resulting from the Automated Photography research project at Paris Photo in 2021 and then at the Galerie l'elac in 2022, the ECAL is exporting this project to Plateform-L in Seoul from 17 September to 8 October 2022, through an immersive audiovisual exhibition.

Mapping of the Body City show Unique creation imagined for Lausanne en Jeux ! - the animation program of the Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 - Body City is a show where arts and urban sports meet in an impressive open-air setting, on the central square of Lausanne. "Bodies in fusion with the city", it is from this strong image that Nicolas Musin conceived and realized Body City, a contemporary show questioning the relationship of the young generations to the city. On an open-air stage representing a city in constant mutation, more than 50 performers aged between 9 and 30 will cross their disciplines, bringing together arts and urban sports such as skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading, scooter, parkour and dance. A poetic and spectacular journey in the heart of Lausanne, where video, sound and light are mixed together! Imagined within the framework of Lausanne en Jeux, this show is above all a work of youth supported by art schools and training centers for urban disciplines established in the agglomeration of Lausanne. Thus, Body City has brought together different actors from Lausanne such as students from ECAL (video design), HEMU (composition of the original music and recording of the soundtrack), dancers from the Ecole-Atelier Rudra Béjart (dance and percussion), JDSEvents (hip hop, breakdance) as well as the riders from La Fièvre and the plotters from X-Trem Move. The mapping of the show was created by the students of the Visual Communication Department (BA Graphic Design, BA Photography, BA Media & Interaction Design) under the direction of Vincent Jacquier, Angelo Benedetto, Jean-Vincent Simonet and Mitch Paone while the editing was done by Amaury Hamon and Clément Lambelet.

Collateral Visions is an investigation of human singularity  inside algorithmic and computer visions. Presented as an installation, this project includes different kinds of new visions born from the ideology of control societies. Those processes are diverted from their common use to form visual proposals alternating between contemplation and confrontation. Through both reappropriation of operative images and staging inside the monitoring device, Collateral Visions reveals systems of dehumanization and anxiety inside the current modes of observation.

After ECAL in June 2015 and Unseen Photo Fair Amsterdam in September 2015, ECAL Bachelor Photography students present "The Embarrassment Show", an exhibition curated by Erik Kessels, cofounder & creative director of KesselsKramer (Amsterdam), at the  NRW-Forum Düsseldorf  from 20 November to 10 January. --------- The Embarrassment Show A workshop and exhibition curated by Erik Kessels cofounder & creative director KesselsKramer (Amsterdam), with Bachelor Photography students. “Embarrassment is important. If you’re not willing to humiliate yourself, make mistakes and downright fuck up, you should consider working in a cubicle farm. It’s safer there. Because as a creative person, you’ll be called an idiot at least once a day. That’s okay. Making mistakes and risking embarrassment, even failure, is how you make progress. Without it, you’ll be stuck in the same old safe zone: not embarrassed, but not better either. In other words: boring. So if we want to do this thing we love – making stuff – we mustn’t be afraid of looking stupid. In this workshop and exhibition I stretched the abilities of 2nd year ECAL Bachelor Photography students to the limit. By embarrassing themselves they are able to tell a personal, often awkward and risky story. This gives them an opportunity to explore an area of photography which they would probably not have dared to touch.”  Erik Kessels
