Summer University CUBA

<meta charset="UTF-8"> After marking the history of the twentieth century with major episodes, Cuba must confront a new historical turning point. Obama's opening speeches and the death of Fidel Castro, leader of the Cuban Revolution of 1959, push the country towards a paradigm shift without priors. Partial liberalisation measures (restaurants, taxis and tourist activities) create an uncertain balance between mass tourism and Communist historical anchorage. The will of the workshop led by Milo Keller (head of photography) and Vincent Jacquier (Head of visual communication) was to rethink the visual relationship that the collective imaginary maintains with Cuba. It was for the students to get out of the tourist cliché, be it the old American car, the colorful colonial houses or the cigar. In partnership with the Embassy of Switzerland in Cuba, this week has been punctuated by many cultural visits. Exchanges with institutions such as the Instituto Superio de Arte (ISA) and the Fototeca de Cuba, as well as meetings with photographers who have worked for decades in Cuba as Sven Creutzmann and Vives-Figueroa, allowed an understanding finer Cuban culture, with exchanges around photographic, educational and policy approaches. The architecture has been one of the major themes, whether through visits to buildings of Porro and Gottardi, or even a visit to the Swiss Ambassador's residence, designed by Richard Neutra. With the help of the Embassy of Switzerland, the students were guided by four local photographers: Raul Canibano, Chino Arcos, Gabriel Guerra and Lissette Solórzano and they were able to get in places and invisible to tourists Havana networks. The projects are varied: technology report was addressed by Margaux Piette in a film about the hot spots Wifi scattered through the city. but also in the photos of Ivo Fovanna centered on the package, physical network for the exchange of files hacked; or in the film of Tatiana Mégevand on tourism activities Airbnb and economic change involved. The social characteristics of Cuba themselves in the series Olivia Schenker and Julien Deceroi. The first has made portraits of LGBTQ minority which enjoys a special acceptance on the island. The second makes us discover Santería, majority religion in Cuba of Christian inspiration and Voodoo. Imported cultural trends was put forward by the skaters in the movie of Pierre-Kastriot Jashari and more vernacular aspects are revealed in this series of Vincent Levrat pigeons collected on roofs by the inhabitants of Havana. The eighteen projects of this workshop were presented in the form of a projection at the Fototeca of Cuba on Vendredi8 December, in the presence of the Swiss ambassador, Mr Stutz and local photographers. This workshop was an opportunity of discovery cultural and social, but also a framework that helped improve the autonomy and ambition projectual students.

This immersive installation created by Pietro Alberti proposes an innovative way to discover an emblematic room of the musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design in Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux). Thanks to Virtual Reality, the perception of the 15th century’s architecture, gildings and furnitures are constantly changing, giving the spectator, a completely new vision of the space and its antic masterpieces. The musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design in Bordeaux (madd-bordeaux) paired with ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne for a collaboration that led to an interactive installation in the museum. This project is the starting point for future collaborations and new digital devices installed in the museum. pietroalberti.ch

Workshop Bloc studios

with Joséphine Choquet (Thévoz Choquet), Virgile Thévoz (Thévoz Choquet)

Marble connotes weight, stability and robustness, and is a quintessentially noble material. In light of this, what kind of objects are able to take full advantage of these properties? How can the sensations of balance or weight be fully expressed, while respecting the innate qualities and limits of this substance? This was the question that ECAL /University of Art and Design Lausanne Industrial Design Bachelor’s students addressed in 2016 at a workshop led by Swiss designers Joséphine Choquet and Virgile Thévoz. This collection has been jointly developed over recent years by Bloc studios and ECAL, and comprises a selection of objects that focus on the rational balance between materials and proportions – playful ball-joint mirrors, punk marble plates pierced through with steel, marble vases in tension with aluminium, minimal tub plugs and mesmerising wedged vases.

Send a message: 140 milliseconds. Download a news: 1.4 seconds. Take a picture: 370 milliseconds. Information is accessible anywhere and anytime. Through our daily actions, we solicit the network without limits and without constraints. For most people, the internet is elusive and invisible. For GAFA, the network shall consist of data centers, submarine cables and coal mines. 20°C is a series of three objects that questions this physical reality and proposes a tangible interaction with our data.

Twins Objects is a quest for new tools of communication, to reassert the worth of human connexions, using the possibilities of the IoT.

Beyond Fields is a plateform independent puzzle game composed of three chapters each inspired by the fundamental interactions of nature. Throughout the game the player pass through different levels during which he has the opportunity to interact with various graphical elements that will allow him to rebalance the force fields and to solve the level. Thanks to a system of filters, it is possible to travel through different representations of the game - graphical, analytical or mathematical - thus allowing the player to have a global vision of the forces that are exerted between the graphical elements. Mélanie Courtinat – I never promised you a garden

with Christophe Guignard

I never promised you a garden offers an immersive journey inside a fantasized hanging garden using virtual reality. The public is invited to walk among chimeric plants and make them blossom with a simple touch. Having noticed that some spectators have a tendency to be uninvolved and passive before an interactive design artwork, this project questions their willful participation. What is to be done when a spectator makes the conscious choice to not interact with an interactive project? What is the design of refusal?

The Sausage of the Future

The Sausage of the Future

Can we count on the sausage to provide a solution, in order to reduce the consumption of meat? And can the use of new ingredients increase the diversity of our diets? Can the sausage make a considerable contribution to a sustainable food culture? To answer these questions, a chef of molecular gastronomy, a master butcher and a designer have teamed up to look into sausage production techniques and potential new ingredients – such as insects, nuts, and legumes – to reinvent the sausage of the future.

Stella Speziali – Tangibles Worlds

with Alain Bellet, Cyril Diagne, Christophe Guignard, Gaël Hugo

Tangible worlds is a project combining virtual reality and tactile sensations, allowing us to feel as close as possible to the virtual elements present in the installation. My research aims to make sure that the user doesn’t limit himself by simply observing the virtual universe, but interacts with the material within and become attentive of the feedback through his sensations and feelings that come by touching these textures. The installation is composed of three different boxes. Each box contains an IR distance sensor, which detects when a hand is inserted and display the virtual world attributed to the box. This new virtual world surrounds the user. A sensor is placed on each wall within the boxes, this sensor recognizes the hand and activates an animation inside the virtual world. I tried to map the sensors in the virtual universe so that a little clue is given to the user and will lead him to trigger the animations.

On the occasion of Foam 15th anniversary, students of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague and the University of Art and Design (ECAL) in Lausanne were asked by Foam to work together on the theme: COLLABORATE. In the months running up to the opening week of Les Rencontres d’Arles the students of both schools have been exchanging material and ideas to create works, preparing for an exhibition at La Bourse du Travail during the opening week of the festival Les Rencontres de la Photographie 2017. Also, when in Arles they make a daily report to be shared with the public. The exhibition space in La Bourse functions as a large studio in which the international students work on these reports.

Senta Simond – Rayon Vert

PHOTOGRAPHY

Senta Simond – Rayon Vert

by Senta Simond

“The Rayon Vert” project takes its title from the optical phenomenon and the 1986 Eric Rohmer film, both of which are reflected in the project approach to portraiture. The work can be seen as a continuation of the tradition focussing on the relationship between artist and model. The images feature a circle of acquaintances and respond to the existing, and too often clichéd, representation of femininity. The images are based on fact and are devoid of narrative and of a patriarchal vision of beauty. The project is presented as both a series of exhibited prints and a book.

Johannes Bauer – Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep

by Johannes Bauer

“Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” is a photographical work which describes a dark and grim vision of a dystopian world, sometime in the future, where mankind has failed, showing architectural fragments as a remaining manifestation of power. By playing with existing and fictional architecture and landscapes, the viewer is forced to question the credibility of what is shown. Throughout the work we discover artifacts from a bygone age but also future artefacts yet to be discovered.

Laura Zoccarato – Spectacle Total

by Laura Zoccarato

“Spectacle Total” is a term derived from the concept of “Gesamtkunstwerk”: a total work of art, in which all elements (music, voice, movement and show) work together. The choreographer Maurice Béjart staged a ballet as a “spectacle total”, by getting his inspiration from different sources, mixing different styles, experimental music, African dances and theatre. I used his idea of mixing different methods to create new visuals by manipulating the images of his archive, both analogically and digitally. The result is an experimental narrative that combines his most famous performances into one book.

Nicolas Toulotte-Garner – Genesis

by Nicolas Toulotte-Garner
